Text Box: With energy in the forefront, our thoughts turn to solutions that will help from within our industry. It may now be time for something to be done about a continuing problem in the United States, and that is “dirt crawl spaces”. The question has been “Vent or Do Not Vent” . Now tons of evidence, right before our eyes, says there is a serious problem with vented dirt crawl spaces. Homeowners and the U.S. economy are paying a price in many ways. Exposed earth provides a means of water vapor getting into your home. Other factors such as outside and inside grade contribute, as well as groundwater leakage and absorption through block Text Box: walls, as well as rain that enters into the dirt crawl space, and either sits and condenses, slowly evaporating into the house, or is removed by some form of pump when the situation worsens to that degree. It’s really not the water BUT the water vapor, also called relative humidity, that KILLS the HOUSE. 37 years ago, we sent man to the moon, but we are still struggling with dirt crawl spaces and the problems they create.
High humidity levels in a crawl space results in the porous material (insulation and wood) to soak water from the air like a sponge. Then we begin to see the development of molds and Text Box: fungi resulting in wood that drips water and continues to provide a stream of water vapor upward into the house.
Have you seen a moldy substance growing on any interior doors or windows? This could be caused from a wet summer crawl space.
