Text Box: Southern Fire Ant This is the one commonly found here in Arkansas
The fire ant’s attack is a 2 part process– First is the bite, then the sting. Histamine is released in the sting.
Secondary infections from the stings can occur and can be very serious, many people die of their wounds annually!!
There are four species that are the most serious species of fire ants in the US. In Arkansas, the Southern Fire Ant is the most common species. It occurs from Text Box: North Carolina through the Southern States and on west to California. The colonies are found in mounds or under the cover of stones, boards, and other objects at or near the base of plants. They also nest in wood or in the masonry of houses especially around a heat source such as a fireplace. Occasionally their mounds may be found even on roofs but mostly they are found near the ground. Southern fire ants usually swarm in late spring or summer, but are not restricted to those times. There may be from 20 to several hundred mounds per acre.
They feed on many things, including insects, oil from Text Box: seeds, meats, grease and honeydew. They can’t eat solid food as they must liquefy their food. Worker ants search for food up to 100 feet away from the colony when temps are in the 70 to 90 degree range. Some foraging tunnels may be over one hundred feet in length. Outwitting a colony is a challenge. Multiple queens are fairly common. A single colony may have up to 100 queens, each reproducing actively. Each queen can lay up to 1500 eggs in a single day!! These queens usually survive up to seven years. However, the workers usually do not survive an entire single season. A season is determined to be approximately one year. It has been reported that mating takes place in the form of a mating flight !!
