RESOURCES: SCORPIONS

Scorpions

Scorpion
Scorpions are nuisance pests, and are also of medical importance because of their stings. Their stings can result in a mild wasp-like sting, which can be complicated by an allergic reaction, and can be fatal in rare instances. Scorpions are found in the arid southwest and also in the south, with rare occurrences in other locations. About 70 species are present in the United States.

Adults measure about 2" to 4" in length, with a stinger at the end of the usually upward curved tail. They have four sets of legs. Because of the variety of species, their color can vary.
Scorpion
Scorpions give birth to live young. Adults may live for several years; up to six or longer. Stings of the common striped scorpion (pictured, above, left) causes only temporary local pain, tingling/itching, some localized swelling or tenderness, and sometimes black and blue areas; comparable to a wasp or bee sting. Stings from the sculptured scorpion can be fatal.
